Lamp Safety at Home: Bulbs, Cables and Sensible Use

Table lamps are simple to use, and a few good habits help keep them safe. This is general advice, so always follow the instructions that come with your lamp.

Use the right bulb

Check the fitting type and the maximum wattage shown on the lamp or the product page, and never go above it. LED bulbs usually run cooler than older bulb types, which is also kinder to shades.

Give the bulb space

Do not cover a lit lamp or the bulb with cloth, paper or other materials, and keep the shade clear of curtains, bedding and other items.

Look after the cable

Keep the cable away from walkways so it cannot be tripped over or pulled. Do not run it under rugs, and avoid tight bends or trapping it under furniture.

Switch off when you are out

It is good practice to switch a lamp off and unplug it before cleaning, changing a bulb or when you are away for a long time.

Check regularly

If you see a damaged cable, a loose plug, a flickering light or a burning smell, stop using the lamp. Do not try to repair it yourself.

Keep away from water

Unless a lamp is clearly made for it, keep table lamps away from damp areas and from liquids.
