How to Style a Table Lamp on a Console, Bedside or Desk
Share
A good lamp deserves a good setting. These are three simple ways to style a table lamp in the places where it is used most.
On a console table
Place the lamp towards one end and balance it with something of a different height on the other side, such as a small vase, a stack of books or a framed print. Keep the surface uncluttered so the lamp can be the feature. A pair of matching lamps on a long console gives a classic, symmetrical look.
By the bed
Choose a lamp that is easy to switch on and off from the bed. Leave enough space beside it for a book, a glass of water and your phone. If the table is small, a slimmer base works better than a wide one.
On a desk
Position the lamp on the side opposite your writing hand so your arm does not cast a shadow over your work. Choose a shade that points the light down at the desk rather than into your eyes.
A few general tips
- Layer your lighting: a table lamp works best alongside softer ceiling or wall light.
- Vary heights across the room so the light feels balanced.
- Keep cables tidy and out of walkways.
