Caring for Your Lamp: Cleaning Shades and Fabrics

A little regular care keeps a lamp looking its best for years. Here is a gentle routine that works for most lamps.

Always switch off and unplug first

Before you clean any lamp, turn it off, unplug it and let the bulb cool down completely.

Dust regularly

Dust is the most common thing that dulls a lamp. Wipe the base and the shade with a dry, soft cloth, or use a soft brush for pleated or textured shades. A lint roller can also lift dust from fabric.

For marks and spots

For light marks, use a slightly damp cloth and dab gently rather than rubbing. Avoid soaking fabric or paper shades, and let them dry fully before you plug the lamp back in. Test any cleaner on a small hidden area first.

Look after the base

Wipe metal, glass or ceramic bases with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners that could mark the finish.

Keep the cable and plug dry

Do not wet the cable, the plug or the switch. If you notice any damage, stop using the lamp.

Placement helps too

Direct sunlight can fade fabric shades over time, so try to keep your lamp out of strong sun where you can.
